The importance of daily movement: Why your body needs more than just a workout

We live in a world that quietly trains us to sit—and most of us don’t even realize how much it’s impacting us.

We sit in the car, we sit through our workday, and when it’s finally time to relax… we sit some more. It’s become so normal that it feels harmless. But from what I see both personally and in my work with clients, this constant stillness takes a real toll on how we feel - physically, mentally, and even emotionally.

Our bodies were not designed for this level of inactivity. They were designed to move consistently throughout the day.

And while workouts are important (and I’m a big believer in strength training), they’re only one piece of the puzzle.

The Reality of Our “Sitting Lifestyle”

If you really think about your day, there are long stretches where you barely move at all.

Over time, that adds up.

When we sit for extended periods, our muscles aren’t engaged, circulation slows, and our bodies essentially shift into a lower-functioning state. You might notice this as stiffness, low energy, brain fog, or even just feeling “off” without a clear reason.

I hear this all the time: “I worked out today, but I still feel sluggish.”

And often, this is why.

Why Daily Movement Matters

Physical Health

Movement throughout the day helps keep your body functioning the way it’s meant to:

  • Reduces stiffness and tension

  • Supports joint health and mobility

  • Improves circulation and energy levels

  • Helps regulate metabolism and blood sugar

It’s not just about intensity, it’s about consistency.

Mental and Emotional Health

This is one I don’t think we talk about enough.

Movement is one of the simplest ways to shift your mood and reset your nervous system. A short walk, a stretch, even a few minutes of movement can:

  • Lower stress

  • Improve your mood

  • Help you feel more grounded and clear

I often encourage clients to move before they feel overwhelmed—not just after.

Brain Health

Your brain loves movement.

When you move your body, you increase blood flow and oxygen to your brain, which supports:

  • Focus and productivity

  • Creativity

  • Memory and learning

If you’ve ever stepped away from your desk and come back with a clearer head, you’ve experienced this firsthand.

Movement Is More Than a Workout

One of the biggest mindset shifts I try to help people make is this:

A workout is not the only time your body needs movement.

You can complete a 45-minute workout and still spend the rest of your day in a mostly sedentary state. That’s why it’s so important to think about how you’re moving throughout your entire day.

This doesn’t have to be complicated or time-consuming. It just needs to be intentional.

A Simple Shift That Changes Everything

Daily movement isn’t about doing more—it’s about weaving movement into the life you already have.

It’s about supporting your body in a way that feels sustainable, not overwhelming.

And most importantly, it’s about paying attention to how much better you feel when you do.

Let’s Take This Further

If you’re reading this and thinking, I know I need to move more, but I’m not sure how to make it consistent in my real life, you’re not alone—and you don’t have to figure it out on your own.

This is exactly the kind of work I do through Rising Tides Wellness.

Together, we look at your lifestyle, your schedule, and your goals, and create a realistic, personalized approach to movement and overall wellness that actually fits your life.

If you’re ready to feel better in your body, have more energy, and build habits that last, I’d love to connect.

You can schedule a discovery call to learn more about working together and take the first step toward a healthier, more supported version of you.
